![]() Graphically, both Dark Cloud and the upcoming Final Fantasy X offer more bang for the buck in terms of visual splendor. Whether you love or hate the game's clichés and shortcomings, Ephemeral Fantasia is nothing more than average when compared with the majority of other RPGs. ![]() The artificial time loop doesn't help matters any either-if you miss the chance to acquire an important item, you'll have to wait five full game days for a second opportunity. Combined with frequent random battles, this makes travel from one town to the next a highly time-consuming and labor-intensive endeavor. The island itself is a single, huge area full of forests, beaches, towns, and dungeons, all of which exist on a 1-to-1 scale with one another. ![]() Second, the game's scope is overwrought on so many levels. There are no surprise plot twists or major whodunits to discover-only an endless array of sex-related jokes to endure en route to the final battle with Xelpherpolis. First, the game's storyline is woefully immature and noncomplex. Lack of originality aside, the two greatest criticisms of Ephemeral Fantasia are actually somewhat significant. Even Rummy, Mouse's hotheaded, big-breasted soldier friend, is strikingly similar to another SquareSoft creation, Tifa from Final Fantasy VII. In all, there are 10 possible party members to enlist, some of which can even alter the outcome of the game depending on how well you communicate with them-yet another classic SquareSoft idea. Some enemies, like Grantus or Beak, will even join your party once they're defeated. ![]() In addition to the active battle system, which lets you select attacks, cast magic, use items, and change strategy in real time, the constant appearance of enemies with multiple forms is something ripped right out of Square's collective conscious. These minigames don't have much bearing on the overall outcome of the story, but a little extra gold, map pieces, or health items can't hurt.īy far, Ephemeral Fantasia takes the majority of its design clichés from two of SquareSoft's larger series, Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. Also like Shenmue, or more recently, Sony's Dark Cloud, Ephemeral Fantasia features a number of optional minigames, such as rhythm-based guitar playing, swimming, arena fighting, dominoes, and even a drinking competition. So much so that if you're not in the proper place at the proper time and not with the proper person and holding the proper item, you'll have to wait an entire game-based week to try again. This timer plays a major role in being able to access dungeons, acquire items, and enlist new party members. Like Sega's Shenmue, the game has its own running clock. Time looping, an idea borrowed from Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, isn't the only RPG cliché present in Ephemeral Fantasia. As long as you remember to store your items in Claire's broken clock between loops, you won't lose any money or health potions either. Each week gives you an opportunity to acquire an additional party member, as well as complete tasks related to the time loop, level your characters in battle, or just explore various spots around the island. As you continually relive the next five days of your life, your primary task is to enlist partners in your quest against Xelpherpolis. Unfortunately, things soon get hot and heavy when you discover that Xelpherpolis, the groom, has placed the island under a nasty time-looping spell and intends to suck the life out of every living man, woman, and child of Pandule. Konami's Ephemeral Fantasia attempts to unify both groups by serving up a quest that is significantly open-ended at the start but becomes increasingly more focused as time marches on.Īssuming the role of a guitar-playing bard named Mouse, you and your guitar, Pattimo, find yourselves invited to play at a royal wedding on the island of Pandule. However, in recent years, a growing faction has also come to prefer the "do anything/go anywhere" approach of nonlinear RPGs, such as Shenmue and Dark Cloud, where plot progression often takes a backseat to things such as character development, exploration, and battle. If the success of Square's Final Fantasy series is any indication, the story-driven approach of linear RPGs is the golden ticket when it comes to popularity.

Walking towards the ticket office, we passed imposing statues of Ancient Roman leaders from Julius Caesar to Trajan to Augustus-I didn’t know chiseled bronze could make me so happy. I thought it was a collection of overgrown ruins (which it is), but the significance and true awesomeness of it missed my stupid brain. ![]() During my last Roman rendezvous, I skipped the Forum because I was 1) lazy, 2) overheated, and 3) grossly uncultured. But walking down gummed and peddled sidewalks to the ultimate destination-the Forum-phased me less than a C on a managerial accounting exam. In Rome, the heat is dry and pounding, unlike the scorching bath of humidity in Gainesville or Saint Petersburg. Sweat clung to my underneck and the yellowing fabric of a white dress despite the early morning time. I knew what each panel meant, I recognized each chiseled sibyl in her ornate niche-and I still grumbled at the mass of tourists, all so interested in sneaking a picture rather than looking at Michelangelo’s talent. Although I had seen the Sistine Chapel last time, the unparalleled skill and sheer monumentality still barreled my 4’11 frame over. “Art appreciation” is such a bland term, but I appreciated the hell out of any work I came across, from an El Anatsui in the modern collection to the mammoth Sistine Chapel. All those pages I’ve read in static textbooks finally came to life through cracked marble and faint paint stains. ![]() Apollo Belvedere, Laocöon and Sons, Hercules, The School of Athens, etc.-basking in their pure forms was remarkable. However, this time, I sucked down the collections like icy Vitamin Water, reveling in the marble busts I had studied in school. I was an ignorant little beast of petty drama and middle school angst in 2011, not caring or knowing about art. My sister and mother lounged in their cardboard beds while my father and me trekked in the liquid heat to Vatican City. Cash cryptically handed over to our concierge. This time, with a brain stuffed with knowledge and feet that craved Roman sidewalks, I wasn’t blind or unaware-I was a hypersensitive detective, feasting on every image the city had to offer. The first time I went to Rome, I was a blindly curious traveler, one that follows parental footsteps and a Rick Steves guide without understanding prior culture or history. Excitement, the kind that kicks your lungs and cramps your entire body, was coursing through me. A taxi with a hottie driver swooped in to eat away our wallets and anxiety, but it eventually dropped us off at Hotel Florida (*we stayed at this hotel last time too*). What a typical Patel move! We’re the kings of cheap Europe, but the bus we clambered onto was the wrong one, despite its attractive 5 euro per person price. ![]() The 30-euro flight landed, the luggage was heaved onto a sketchy bus, and my family got royally lost in Rome. Here’s what I experienced and felt on this second trip, a bath of sweat and ecstasy that lasted five days. I was back home, finally, after an American exile of five years that robbed views of the Colosseum, Pantheon, and Forum from my starved eyes. This past summer, in the brutal blaze of August, I returned to Rome. I was a Roman podcast geek! I threw parties to celebrate the anniversary of me studying Rome! I was an unbridled dork in every sense of the word, taped glasses and Steve Job sweaters the only thing missing from my tiny frame. That trip was the catalyst for my Everything Rome mania, a lasting obsession that culminated in writing two books set in that ancient Italian heartland. I first traveled to Rome in the summer of 2011, the sticky months of ignorance and unformed personality gracing my 14-year-old self. Hi all! It’s been graying eons since I’ve posted on LTA, but here’s a stereotypical MACKENZIE PATEL post about my one and only stable, reliable love: Ancient Rome. Originally geocentric, it was modified by Copernicus to place the Sun at the centre to help simplify the model. ![]() Although the model was capable of reasonably accurately predicting the planets' positions in the sky, more and more epicycles were required as the measurements became more accurate, hence the model became increasingly unwieldy. After the planets' motions were more accurately measured, theoretical mechanisms such as deferent and epicycles were added. It assumed the heavens were fixed apart from the motion of the spheres and was developed without any understanding of gravity. This model posited the existence of perfect moving spheres or rings to which the stars and planets were attached. Historically, the apparent motions of the planets were described by European and Arabic philosophers using the idea of celestial spheres. However, Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which accounts for gravity as due to curvature of spacetime, with orbits following geodesics, provides a more accurate calculation and understanding of the exact mechanics of orbital motion. ![]() To a close approximation, planets and satellites follow elliptic orbits, with the center of mass being orbited at a focal point of the ellipse, as described by Kepler's laws of planetary motion.įor most situations, orbital motion is adequately approximated by Newtonian mechanics, which explains gravity as a force obeying an inverse-square law. Normally, orbit refers to a regularly repeating trajectory, although it may also refer to a non-repeating trajectory. In celestial mechanics, an orbit (also known as orbital revolution) is the curved trajectory of an object such as the trajectory of a planet around a star, or of a natural satellite around a planet, or of an artificial satellite around an object or position in space such as a planet, moon, asteroid, or Lagrange point. For other uses, see Orbit (disambiguation).Īn animation showing a low eccentricity orbit (near-circle, in red), and a high eccentricity orbit (ellipse, in purple) This article is about orbits in celestial mechanics, due to gravity. That material is extremely rare, coming mainly from one place in Oregon, and is hard to cut. In the base of cases, they could compete with high-end stones and precious opal. That optical phenomenon is comparable to labradorite but with many intense colors in most cases. However, even the best did not demand near the price of fire obsidian. Recently, superior quality rainbow sheen obsidian was the most expensive of the varieties available. Such colors are often intense and bold, but the obsidian keeps a black appearance from many angles. That rare form of gemstone shows rainbow colors when it is displayed at the right angle. The most valuable and rarest obsidian type is referred to as fire obsidian. For example, one is in a league of its own in both expense and in appearance. However, some are more valuables than others are. You will find different types of obsidian in the market today. What is the most expensive and rarest type of obsidian? Furthermore, the Balchik Volcano has located only seven kilometers away from that area. ![]() Strike-slip faults are distinct from the previous two because they don’t involve vertical motion. What type of stress causes a strike-slip fault? As the larger plates are pushed or pulled in different directions they build up strain against the adjacent plate until it finally fails. The cause of strike-slip fault earthquakes is due to the movement of the two plates against one another and the release of built up strain. What is the cause of an earthquake due to a strike-slip fault? What is the difference between a strike-slip and dip-slip fault? Strike slip faults are when rocks move along side one another, while dip-slip is when the rock moves along the dip of the fault. What is the difference between dip slip and strike-slip faults? After a quake along a strike-slip fault, railroad tracks and fences can show bends and shifts. This is the case for the San Andreas, which runs along the boundary of the Pacific and North American plates. Strike-slip faults tend to occur along the boundaries of plates that are sliding past each other. How is strike-slip fault formed? Where do strike-slip faults occur? If the block on the far side of the fault moves to the left, as shown in this animation, the fault is called left-lateral. The fault motion of a strike-slip fault is caused by shearing forces. Strike-slip faults are vertical (or nearly vertical) fractures where the blocks have mostly moved horizontally. They form in oceanic and continental crust/lithosphere. Strike-slip faults occur in most plate tectonic settings, primarily at plate boundaries (like most other fault types). Great friction is common as the plates move, but sometimes the plates become stuck and movement temporarily stops. Where two plates slide horizontally past each other, surface area is neither created nor destroyed. They also sometimes develop within a continental plate. These faults can form between two small blocks of land or crustal plates. Transform faults within continental plates include some of the best-known examples of strike-slip structures, such as the San Andreas Fault, the Dead Sea Transform, the North Anatolian Fault and the Alpine Fault.Ī strike slip fault is a fault zone where two blocks of land move horizontally rather than vertically along a fault plane. Note the directions of the arrows. What is an example of a strike-slip fault? In this case, the field geologists would picture themselves standing on the blue block. The image below provides a block diagram of a left-lateral strike-slip fault or left-lateral transform fault. Left-Lateral Strike-Slip Faultįor instance, a left-lateral strike-slip fault means the block opposite from which one is standing, moves left. To simplify, geology students and geologists in the field imagine themselves standing on the reference block, looking outward to the moving block. And then examining the movement of the other block in relation to the referenced. It is determined by selecting one block as a reference. This defines the type of strike-slip fault-movement. Left-Lateral or Right-Lateral Strike-Slip FaultĪ transform fault can be either left-lateral or right-lateral. The opposite of a strike-slip fault is a dip-slip fault. Strike-Slip Fault (Transform Fault): In the field of geology, a strike-slip fault, or a transform fault, is a fault in which movement is parallel to the strike of the fault plane. ![]() Although there has been some discussion regarding this in the issue tracker, the P圜harm team doesn’t seem keen on adding this feature.
